Sites offering free math worksheets abound on the Internet. So what should free math worksheets look like? Are you searching for worksheets that have lots of problems for paper-pencil completion? Or is the illusive long division worksheet your quest? Finding the answers to these questions depends largely on personal preferences...and
more importantly who will be completing your freely printed math worksheets. Here are 10 criteria to keep in mind when selecting free arithmetic worksheets to use with students.

[1] Division worksheets are not all created equal. There are basically two types: math fact sheets and long division sheets. Math fact sheets are easy to create (with the division symbol between the numbers) and require few if any paper calculation from students. Long division sheets are more difficult to program, e.g., with or
without remainders, and allow for stepwise student completion of problems.

[2] Problems should use the Courier font. Why? Every Courier font character uses the same amount of space. A comma is the same width as the number 5. This means that all of the numbers line up perfectly for carrying during addition and bringing the zero down in division.
Make sure you can distinguish between the problem number and the actual problems. The problem numbers should be less obtrusive.

[4] Are there too many problems on the page? Some authors attempt to pack in the problems, leaving little room for students to show their work. Maybe there are not enough problems to accurately assess student knowledge.

[5] Are the digits on the printed page large or small? In my opinion and within reason, the numbers can never be too large. Exhibiting stress at an early age on elementary studentsí eyes from staring at small print can lead to stronger prescription lenses.

[6] Whereís the answer sheet? Are the answers correct? Are the answers listed in a column that you have to match with the student worksheets or on a replica of the student page laced with answers? Last thing you need is to be in a hurry and red mark student worksheets...when their answers were correct all along.

[7] The student worksheets should print squarely on the page. No cut offs allowed. A pet peeve: get rid of the header and footer if you are printing from a browser. Students donít need to know the URL of worksheets. Itís just plain tacky.

[8] Developers of free math worksheets primarily use either of two methods for displaying and printing worksheets on the Internet. PDF pages require an additional piece of software, Adobe Acrobat, which should automatically open worksheets in your browser. PDF worksheets theoretically cannot be manipulated and display/print precisely as the developer designed. The second mode of delivery, HTML code, displays worksheets directly in your browser window. The downside of using HTML based worksheets is they are prone to printing problems. A worksheet meant for one page can easily bleed over to a second sheet.

[9] Some free math worksheet sites allow you to choose criteria, click a button, and generate a web page of problems. These types of web sites allow for worksheets that produce random digits in numbers. You should find more robust problems sets on web-generated math worksheets.

Your child loves to read, write, recite, and talk! Incorporate stories like "The Seven Swans" or "The Twelve Months" into first grade number recognition lessons. Clapping game rhymes like "Miss Mary Mack" could be a lead in to times tables practice in second or third grade math lessons. And word problems are an essential ingredient at all levels.
Logical-Mathematical Intelligence ("number/reasoning smart")
Your child loves math! S/he is also good at problem-solving, recognizing patterns, and likes to conduct scientific experiments. Focus on the relationship between patterns and numbers, i.e., geometric forms and numbers, like the triangle and the number 3, the square and the number 4, etc. Use number "tricks" to encourage and enliven math practice, and point out patterns in the times tables, factors, etc. Relate math concepts to some of those science experiments!
Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence ("body smart")
Your child is physically active and has excellent eye-hand coordination and dexterity. Liven up your math lessons with lots of physical movement like stepping and counting, first the numbers and then the times tables. Adapt vigorous games like leap frog or tag for effective math skills practice, and include lots of hands on activities like making "real" numbers with clay and other materials and using manipulatives to learn math concepts.
Musical Intelligence ("music smart")
Your child enjoys singing and playing musical instruments, recognizes musical patterns and tones, and remembers songs and melodies well enough to sing or play "by ear." She's good at thinking in patterns, rhythms, and sounds. Relate music theory to math concepts, (i.e., scales' and notes' relationship to fractions). Have your musical student compose songs that are helpful learning aids for challenging math concepts such as learning the steps in long division.
Visual-Spatial Intelligence ("picture smart")
Your child loves to draw, paint, put puzzles together, and interpret graphs, charts, and maps. Include art as an integral part of your math curriculum with colorful and imaginative illustrations of concepts and lessons. Use visual patterns like magic squares to teach factors and other number patterns. Teach with manipulatives as much as possible, i.e. color-coded columns for place value, coin rubbings to teach decimals and fractions using money amounts, and incremental, color-coded fraction pieces.
Interpersonal Intelligence ("people smart")
Your child understands and interacts well with others, and is skilled at assessing their emotions, motivations, and intentions. She's good at verbal and non-verbal communication, seeing things from different perspectives, resolving conflicts, and creating positive relationships. Your math curriculum should include lots of group activities like math-adapted games, cooperative problem solving, and group projects that use math skills like building, cooking, gardening, and crafts.
Intrapersonal Intelligence ("self smart")
Your child is self-reflective and aware, good at assessing strengths and weaknesses, understands the basis for motivations and feelings. She's a creative day-dreamer who also enjoys analyzing theories and ideas. Include lots of "back story" in your math curriculum: history and biography, like the origins of the modern measurement system (the king's foot, the original word for mile, mille: a thousand paces), the history of number systems, and mathematicians' life stories.
Naturalistic Intelligence ("nature smart")
Your child loves exploring the great outdoors, and has a lively interest in all things in nature, like botany, biology, and zoology. She's good at cataloging or categorizing information, and likes camping, gardening, and hiking. Imbue your math curriculum with multiple examples of how math appears in the natural world, such as the spiral in the sunflower and snail shell, the hexagon in the snowflake and honeycomb, and even the octagon in street stop signs! Combine your math lessons with gardening, a wonderful mix.
Integrating all these aspects into your homeschool math curriculum will not only insure that your child(ren) will be more engaged and interested in their math lessons, but that their interest will result in better retention, higher test scores, and a lifelong love of learning. Math, more so than any other subject, needs to be taught and learned with high-interest, versatile, and creative materials and methods!

Much of how the students feel about math comes from the instructor. Any real math enthusiast would take extreme offense at the very idea that math is boring. If the teacher of the math class is not someone who is passionate about the subject, the teacher is going to be disinterested in the teaching of math and will treat it as though he or she was teaching on variations of the color grey. The instructors lack of interest will be passed to the student which could kill many young peoples love of math entirely.
It is important at the administration of the school to see math as a topic that needs to be taught as a fundamental life skill by an instructor who lives and breathes math ideas. If the instructor is passionate about the topic and considers math to be the most exciting area of study in the world, that passion will be passed to the students. While it may not convert every student into a math fanatic, it will make the kids enjoy their time in math class and the job of learning important math skills will be much easier than if math is tedious and painful to get through.
Parents and educators can work together to make sure math does not become something students come to dread. As parents, its good to look inward to find out if you have "math phobia" because your attitude toward the subject could be passed to your child. Along with giving the math students in your life plenty of encouragement and support, there are lots of ways to make math fun. Math games and puzzles and math based online adventures can take each math idea and turn it into an exciting exploration for each child. Parents can also work with the school administration to hold math fairs where many math based games and social events can change the perception of math and make it one of the "cool things" to do. That effort to make math interesting and valued to your kids will pay off in a big way throughout their academic career and on into their adult lives as well.

Not long ago, I was reading some articles online written by someone who owned a website peddling math tutoring, and I was taken aback by the advice, and realized that the writer had done nothing more than confuse any student who might have come to that web-article. Part of me wondered if it was even written by a human, it almost looked to me as if it had been written using derivative software, the type that spins an article or content from somewhere else and re-arranges the sentences to make it appear to be genuine unique content.

Indeed, I suppose derivative content generation software might fool some people, some of the time, but I'd say it is a very unwise idea for teaching or tutoring math because it's very hard to describe how to do a math problem using words without symbols.
Now then, I understand that a math tutor might have a hard time writing articles online, because math has a specific set of rules and standards which must be followed and writing proper English is a completely different set of skills some of which must seem very arbitrary, ambiguous, and even bathed in hypocrisy sometimes to a mathematic mind; "it's all wrong they might say," as the rules are so full of holes and exceptions, and then there is writer's prose on top of that, which trumps all.
One great thing about reading articles on mathematics is that for anyone in the field it is quite easy to immediately spot a phony. Of course, the opposite is also true, anyone who isn't an expert, probably will not know the difference. Okay so, rather than settling for bad online math articles, I recommend that you search online; "The Khan Institute" and start watching all the math videos posted. I completely guarantee you, that if you watch each and every one of those videos 10-times each giving them you full attention, while sitting with a pad of paper and a pencil, trying it as you go, that once you are done, you will be in the top 1/10 TH of 1% of the math experts in this entire nation. And don't worry they are free.
Indeed, I hope you will consider all this and be careful from whom you take advice online. Meanwhile after you are half-way through with the assignment of watching all those videos 10-times each, let me know what you think.
